Meet Jeff Burkinshaw

I started Discovery Tech because I hate bad training. I can't stand wasting time with busy work that checks boxes while students check out. Knowledge and skills can be shared quickly and remotely now, so you don't have to move to the city and pay for a brick-and-mortar campus. Learn from people who actually do the work. Don't waste your time, and don't waste your money.

Jeff Burkinshaw is the founder of Discovery Tech. He has 25 years as a senior protection and control technologist, technical instructor, construction and commissioning manager, and director of field services. He has led the testing, commissioning, and energization of over 500 MW of hydroelectric and wind generation and transmission substations. He has developed training for BC Hydro, built a field-services line for a national engineering firm, and holds a Provincial Instructors Diploma along with BCIT Electrical Power and Computer Control diplomas.

Project Based

Project-based learning

Traditional school often teaches subjects one at a time and tests you on what you can remember. Our project-based modules start with a clear goal—something you’ll actually build or solve—and you learn the different subjects as you need them to finish the work. For many people this feels more natural, more useful, and more motivating.

Traditional Subject-by-Subject Learning

  • Subjects taught in isolation (math one hour, writing the next). Knowledge is often abstract and disconnected from real use.
  • Teacher sets the pace and sequence. Students often ask “When will I ever use this?”
  • Success measured mainly by tests, quizzes, and recall of isolated facts.
  • Many learners struggle to transfer classroom knowledge into real situations. Retention fades quickly after the test.
  • Can feel fragmented or irrelevant, leading to disengagement for students who learn best by doing.
  • Best suited for students who thrive on clear structure, lectures, and individual academic performance.

Project-Based Learning

  • Learning starts with a concrete project goal. Subjects are pulled in only as they become useful for completing the work.
  • The project creates natural urgency. Students learn what they need, when they need it, to move the project forward.
  • Success measured by the quality of the finished project and the student’s ability to explain and apply what they learned along the way.
  • Skills are practiced in context, so they stick better. Students see the connection between theory and doing, which builds confidence and long-term recall.
  • Higher engagement for many students because the purpose is visible from day one. Motivation comes from progress on something that matters.
  • Especially powerful for people who want practical skills, hate busywork, or learn better when they can see how everything fits together toward a real outcome.
